Default Joining line to closed path

Hey folks, I am new at Freehand. Can anyone tell me how to join a line to a closed path? I have tried adding a point to the closed object path, in hopes that I could "join" the line to this object, but that doesn't work. What I want to do is divide up a rectangle with the lines, but I want to join the lines together so I can fill the areas with different colors. Thanks!

You could use the knife tool to divide the rectangle and then apply
different color fills to the subsections.

The trick here is that one path cannot serve as a outer path of two
shapes. To get the effect you want to you need to have two lines on top
of each other, so that one will be the left side of a rectangle and the
other will be the right side of the opposite rectangle. As Wes
suggested the knife too will do this automatically, IF, the "close cut
paths" option is selected (double click the knife tool for options).

Thanks Rich. Wes' suggestion was on track, but you closed the gap with that extra information. Really appreciate your help.

Here is another problem I am having: When I have sellected the fill color for an object, I am having difficulty changing the fill color. I select the object, then select a color from the mixer and drag that color onto the object, but nothing happens. Same problem when I select a color from the Tools palatte - the color doesn't change.

Also, a 3d question. Once you extrude an object to a 3d shape, is there any way to remove the 3d effect without having to redraw the object?

you don't need to drag color onto object, just click on it's 'box' in your color pallette

Does it change color when you drag a swatch from the mixer to the fill
color swatch in the object properties panel?

Yes you can. 'Modify Menu>Extrude>Remove Extrude'

You may be running into the whole new way that FHMX handles fills with
groups/grouped items. As I am still using FH9 (waiting on a stable
version to upgrade to) I can't give any specifics. I'll have to allow
others to help. Same goes for the 3D extrusion questions, don't know.

Is this new behavior or have you always had this problem?

Another possibility is to use the 'dividing' lines already drawn, but
to make them part of closed paths. The shape they have outside the
rectangle is irrelevant: once the path is closed it can be
Intersected with a copy of the rectangle to produce a new shape
enclosed by both paths. In general the Union, Punch, Intersect, ...
family of tools is extremely useful for this type of work.
