Are you sure you wouldn't rather save a copy in the .psd format? This would allow you to go back at a later time to rework the image with all editing layers intact....

i'm just looking for a way to transfer to disc for the future. when i tried to flatten the image, i press layer, but none of the functions are highlighted for me to do so.

Sounds like the image might be in index mode. Check to be sure it's in RGB toolbar>image>mode
