Default jump rope.dir is not a director file + file is corrupt

I have a user that has created a .dir file using Director 8.5. After modifying and saving, she opens the file the next day only to be met with this error.

"jump rope.dir is not a director file" "The file has become corrupted."

I have tried renaming the file and using the .dir extension, but still get the same error.. Also, when I view the properties of the file, it states that its "0" kilobytes.. How can this be.. This is also happening to some of her other .dir files..

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated..

By the way, I have tried recovering the file from a backup tape, but it also indicates the file is 0 k..

    Thanks

If the Operating System (i.e. Windows Explorer or the Mac Finder) reports a
file as being 0 bytes then you're stuck - whatever caused the file to be
screwed up has alrready done its damage. Chances are the file is
    unrecoverable, sorry...

What do you mean when you say you tried renaming the file and using the
'.dir' extension - didn't it already have that extension?
