    No you aren't.

The problem is that this is meant to be a *user* list, and lots of users
don't know how to subscribe... therefore requiring subscription to post is
    a no-no.

No, the list server had some major difficulties with it's spam filters
    last week.

Nope. Over the last few days I've been getting very little legitimate
traffic from this list, and an unusually high proportion of junk. I
    suspect issues with the server.

    Cheers!

The polite term for it is 'Spam' :(

Nope, I'm getting it too. Most noticeably the loony with his 60-K-sized
posts about 'IEEP' and bizarre gobbledygook. Six of 'em at last count....

If it's addressed to the list, wouldn't it be safe to assume everyone
    else is as well?

Can you quantify "a lot"? I get maybe 3 or 4 spam emails a week on this
list, but sometimes I will go a week without any at all.

I think what alex meant is the sudden flood of spam that's been incoming for
about a week now. Before that, it was much quieter.

And it shows how effective the filtering is despite all the complaints
    it's not working.

Can someone explain what these are all about? I've seen some of these
types of huge amounts of gibberish on other lists.. Are they strictly for
    harassment or what?

No.. it's mails like the one referred to above.. (about 'IEEP'), several
of which appeared on this list a few days ago.. Long strings of incoherent
words.. not making any sense at all..

I've seen similar entries before on other lists and newsgroups.. in
particular groups like mail-abuse-sightings, etc. It almost seems as if
they are simply to harass the group and take up bandwidth...

It really doesn't matter, I suppose, but I have been curious about them.

Reminded me of a Hell.Surfer message repeated 1000 times over ;)

It did sound conspiracy-theory-esque, but I never *really* wanted to
spend the time on the constructed rage to decipher it.
