just starting
am just starting using indesign
have to create a large catalogue, including a index and a contents, is it best to to create the index and content pages first or do i have to do them after?
also what would be the best layout to use single pages?

InDesign has indexing features. The manual will explain more fully than a forum post. If you set up the document properly, the index can be automatically produced based on the contents that you create.
Although you say that you are 'just starting', giving some background on you previous experience may help. For instance, if you are familiar with doing this kind of thing in another page layout application (Word, Quark, etc), fellow users can help relate how to do this in InDesign.

TOC and Index are just about last things you are going to do.

Please be more specific. Do you mean single sided?
