kernel build problems - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Hi I'm having trouble installing a new kernel that I just compiled. Please note I've been working closely with the Kernel-HowTo and am running out of time and patience. Default kernel build problems

    Hi
    I'm having trouble installing a new kernel that I just compiled.
    Please note I've been working closely with the Kernel-HowTo and am running
    out of time and patience.

    I'm running Redhat 9 with grub and have tried grub several
    different ways. Here's what I currently have:

    default=1
    timeout=10
    splashimage=(hd1,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
    title Red Hat Linux (kustom kernel)
    root (hd1,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-20.9custom ro root=/dev/hdc1
    # kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-20.9custom ro root=LABEL=/
    initrd /initrd-2.4.20-20.9custom.img
    title Red Hat Linux (2.40-20.9)
    root (hd1,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-20.9 ro root=LABEL=/
    initrd /initrd-2.4.20-20.9.img

    The references to root=LABEL=/ fail to work under the new kernel. The
    utility "mkinitrd" claims to take care of such references but I can't get
    them to work. When I try to boot, I get a kernel panic with a suggestion
    that I pass the initrd= function to the kernel which of course I'm trying
    above.
    I'm not sure what to do. The /dev/hdc1 refers to the /boot partition
    which I've verified using the mount command. The custom initrd image is
    newly created using mkinitrd passing the fstab parameter.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    `Doug

    Just one. Tell us exactly how you created the kernel, step by step. Then we
    will tell you which steps you missed.

    This inquiry is made almost daily here, and it is nearly always a case of
    not compiling the kernel properly.

    What kind of filesystem is your root partition? Are you sure you built

    Excellent question... I'm checking now.

    It seems that the /boot partition is ext3 and the filesystem is NOT
    included in the kernel I created.

    I'm recompiling now.

    THanks for the help!

    Corrected (hopefully);

    kernel /vmlinux-2.4.20-20.9custom ro root=/dev/hdc2

    Assuming that your root partition is hdc2, if not change to the correct
    partition.

    The label should work. maybe you missnamed the kernel. did you use 'make
    install' as your final kernel step?
