kernel doesn't know about the loop device - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

When I built the kernel (2.4.19) with menuconfig, I clearly chose built-in loop device support. When I ran /dev/MAKEDEV (1.7) it created some loop devices (loop1, loop2, etc.) Still, I can't: mount -o loop /tmp/rfloppy /mnt/loop1 because then I get the message: according to /proc/devices this kernel doesn't know about the loop device. Is this really a kernel problem? Here is how I built it. make mrproper make menuconfig #Here is where I selected loop support under block devices make dep make bzImage make modules make modules_install cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage cp System.map /boot and I reboot. Default kernel doesn't know about the loop device

When I built the kernel (2.4.19) with menuconfig, I clearly chose
built-in loop device support. When I ran /dev/MAKEDEV (1.7) it created
some loop devices (loop1, loop2, etc.)

    Still, I can't: mount -o loop /tmp/rfloppy /mnt/loop1

because then I get the message: according to /proc/devices this kernel
doesn't know about the loop device.

Is this really a kernel problem? Here is how I built it.

    make mrproper
make menuconfig #Here is where I selected loop support under block devices
    make dep
    make bzImage
    make modules
    make modules_install
    cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage
    cp System.map /boot

and I reboot. LILO points to this image.

If there is a more appropriate forum for this level of question, please
point me in the right direction. This is the first time I've needed help
since I started linux, but now I'm really stuck. Thanks.

You forgot to run lilo. Why?

I was about to write, "What the heck does that have to do with it," but
I decided to try it first. Halfway through, I remembered that I last ran
lilo from a different partition. I suppose I'd have to run lilo even if
it was the same directory, because it wouldn't have the exact same
position on the disk? or does the file system preserve the start
position when you copy over an existing file?

This is great! Now I can build away. I wouldn't have gotten very far
without the ability to recompile the kernel. I might have had to give up
    and use Redhat :(

Thanks a million, I did not suspect lilo, because I was still booting fine.
