    Default key commands disappear

I am having trouble with my key commands being randomly disabled in Illustrator (it's happening in Photoshop too). The space bar for the grabber hand, shift to constrain and shift to drag in a straight line, and option-drag to copy all work and don't at different times.

That paragraph was directly lifted from an archived entry, and all the responses tip toed about it being a user error without actually saying it. I'd like to know if this actually IS a user error as one of my users is having this problem. We are using Illustrator 10.0.3 & Photoshop 7.0.1 on OSX.2.8.

    Thanks,
    Kim

You need to upgrade your Mac OS X operating system. See this Adobe Knowledgebase article:

I'm having similar problems using Illustrator CS - at certain times, none of the keyboard shortcuts work, although I can still use the tool bar. I'm running panther on a blue & white G3, so maybe my problems are memory/processor speed related. If anyone has ideas on how to fix this, bring 'em on!

Crazy! Seems like most of you are having this problem running latter versions of Illustrator or OS X. I'm running AI 10 on OS 9.2.2
AI 10 has never run like a bullet train on my system, however I am use to it's lethargic tendencies. I can't however get used to not having my option/shift/spacebar commands. I can't even zoom out because the option key won't reverse the zoom tool.
    sniff :((

I'm not on OSX yet either, so this is only a guess. Do the users have some keyboard parameter such as "Caps Lock" toggled on when the problem arises? I know sometimes that can effect keyboard input to apps. I'm also curious if there are multiple keyboard layouts in the keyboard control panel that they could be accidentally switching to?

Have you made sure that the Easy Access Control Panel is disabled? I seem to remember that this was a problem at one time as was the Passport Control Panel.

And stop spilling Pepsi on the keyboard.

I complained for years and years about my CD-Burner not working until finally I had a technician come out and calmly explain to me that it doesn't accept grilled cheese sandwiches.

    Hi Larry,
Is the Easy Access Control Panel a feature of OSX? Can't find any such think on my system.

Fixed it! I don't know if it will work for everyone but this is what I did. I figured it wasn't entirely a software issue. I plugged in another keyboard to my USB hub. All keys worked fine. I then unplugged it and returned to my original keyboard. Everything's back to normal.
Might be as simple as unplugging the keyboard? Not sure, but I hope it works for some of you.

Don't you love it when the caveman fix works? It's broken? Kick it. It doesn't work? Turn it off and back on. If all else fails, bash it with a hammer.

The good news is it works in fixing relationships too.

It could be similar, my wacom tablet quits on me everytime I get a static shock from touching my desk. Then I have to unplug it from the hub and plug it back in and it works fine.

Do you have alot of static electricity flying around your office?

I have never had a problem with my keyboard though.

    Just a thought.

    Reboot
    Hold down command+s
    Enter fsck -y
    Press enter

This fixes the problem....well, it does for OSX users. OS9, try Disk First Aid (I think that's what it's called).

    thanks,
