Default Knife Tool?

How do I stop the knife tool from clipping off the end of the line I'm
trying to split when I get close to the end of that line?

What version of FH? Platform?

What are your knife tool setting? Set to 0 (zero) width and 'tight fit'.

The knife tool occasionally misbehaves for me, deleting something it should
not. I just undo and make the cut again. The second time it usually works
properly.

FH MX 11, G4, Mac OS 10.2.8. My knife tool is set that way. Still clips off
ends when is close and near the line's end.

I can't make it happen today, but I know I've seen it before. How long (in
points) is the segment that is being deleted?

If you're using FHMXa (version 11.0.1) then I suggest you report this as a
bug to:

The knife tool deletes cut line when the knife is closer than 1 point.

Yes, I'm seeing this. Now if you zoom in to a high magnification you may see
what appears to be a stray point left behind. However, if you drag on one of
these stray points, a line emerges, you'll see that it's actually two points
on a line of zero length!

I believe this is related to a bug that was supposedly fixed.

Quoted from this page of bux fixes in FHMXa (watch text wrap of link):

http://www.macromedia.com/support/freehand/ts/documents/fh11_0_1overview.htm

"The problem with some small shapes collapsing like deflated balloons when
cut with the knife tool has been improved. We have reduced the sensitivity
of when points are merged from within 1 point of each other to 1/2 point.
This fixes the problem as reported but really small shapes may still display
this problem."

The problem is that the length of the small line segment is being rounded
down to zero, leaving behind what are essentially stray points.

The workaround would be to use the pen tool to place a point. With the point
still selected, Modify > Split.

Now I have to ask, why do you need line segments less that one point long?

I don't see any residue point, just my knifed line shortened instead of cut
in 2.

Draw a line 0.05 point wide. Zoom in to max magnification of 6400%. With
Knife, cut off a piece about the same length as the line width. Cut again a
few times with the remaining segment. Now 'Select All'. Are any stray points
selected?

Sorry, had zoomed to 256 x, with zoom tool.

No stray points, just with each cut the shorter section disappears.
