Large file size when saving Illustrator CS 11 Files

I recently installed Illustrator CS (ver.11) on OS 10.3.3 Panther. I'm running a G5 with lots of RAM. When I re-save my Illustrator 8 and 10 files in Illustrator 11, the file size doubles?

I deselected all the "save" options such as Create PDF compatible file, Include Linked Files, Embed ICC Profiles and Use Compression in order to get the file size down but it still saves a file about double the size of the older version file.

What is making it so big and is there a setting to get the size down to what it was originally?

Yeah, me too. One trick I've learned is to delete all of the unused color swatches, and then export the legacy version of the file. Still, what AI 8 created as about a 35-75kb file comes out about 300k (down from 700k with color swatches). I must export the legacy files to use an old machine running Mac OS 7.5 for vinyl cutting. The hard drive there is filling up FAST!!!! What can we do?

Run the default action "Delete Unused" on your files... about the 10th down on the list. Deletes unused swatches plus many other palette defaults. That reduces the starting size of most files by 75%.

Better yet, run the action on your illy startup files (in the illy plugins folder) and/or on templates.

We are having problems with Ill 10 files saving as huge ( 1 G + on 8.5 x 11 pages) files back to 10 after edits are done. Our work around has been to save down to 9, which seems to work without drawbacks, but what causes us to save a 50 M file, and get a 700 M file back out???

I have learned do not save the file down from AI10 to AI9 or AI9 to AI8 if transparency is involved. I had a file that I thought was no big deal go to more than a gig before. But that was awhile ago and I'm not sure if it was OS9 or 9.1 with AI10 or AI10.03. Or it might have been saving AI10 down to AI9 with out the AI9.? update.

Anyway, if this helps, I am running OS9.22 with AI10.03 and have not had this problem in a long time. Take advantage of the new FREE updates whenever you can.

That's the problem with software developers and upgrade wonks. The tendency is to think every problem created by an upgrade would just go away if everyone upgrades. But the real world is that not everyone can afford to spend thousands of dollars a year upgrading all their equipment and software to keep up with these things. If everyone only used one application, there'd be less reason to complain, but that doesn't happen. Worse, some corporations are looking at the need to upgrade several hundred users and workstations at a time. This can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. I was doing work for a major U.S. corporation which was still running PS4 and AI8 on G4s as of earlier this year, and I have no reason to believe they've upgraded yet.

Flippant comments like "Join the 21st century" don't do much to solve anybody's problems.

I am having the same issue. It seems to be only when you have placed images in the file, but I have made sure the files are linked and not embedded. It's a huge waste of space. Does anyone know how to fix it?

We have the sameproblems even with linked files. I linked 4 files en de file size grew along.

Anybody, or is this one of the cs things.

Kristen mentioned this in the original post, but it bears repeating...make sure you uncheck the "Create PDF Compatible File" box when you are saving your document, otherwise all your linked images will be embedded, and your files will get pretty large. Otherwise, your files shouldn't really be all that huge. Is there any really complex vector art in there - i.e. something converted with Streamline that has literally billions of anchor points?
