At what resolution? Are you talking about a printer device (which one?); offset litho?; etc. How is this image going to be used?

Good discussion and need further advice:
A 24" x 36" file could be hundreds of megs. large. What is the proper way to submit the work for a layout this big? (All work to a large format ink-jet printer)

170ppi should be more than enough for a print this size.

Maybe. It still depends upon how the image is to be reproduced, how it will be used, and from what distance it will be seen.
