Default Launching MP3s Opens Player as Browser Window

I've got three direct links to progressive-stream MP3 files (my host
doesn't support realtime streaming, bastards) on the page,
www.uniquelives.com/public/gallery_aud.htm, and it used to be that
clicking the links would launch Quicktime, RealPlayer or Windows Media
Player using their standalone control panels, that is, just as if
you'd launched the file locally. This was good.
Now, suddenly, when I click one of the MP3 links, Quicktime and
Realplayer open inside of, and fill entirely, a new *browser* window.
This is bad (although WMP still launches in standalone mode).

Can anyone tell my why this is happening?

AFAIK, all this is beyond your control. Applications will launch or not,
inside the browser or outside, autoplay or not, all according to the
user's individual browser and file handling preferences.

You may want to give 'pseudo-streaming' a try. It works really well on many
of my sites and opens the end user's default mp3 player. I put together a
short tutorial.

This is correct, as I've fought with this issue in detail. It turns out
that the reason *any* media file will play inside of the browser vs a stand
alone player, with or without certain settings is solely based on each
user's preference settings on their system. I finally wrote it off as a
slight annoyance, and not really a huge problem because the users should be
comfortable with their own settings anyway.
