Layer locks printer

Hi Group,
I am making a cd tray and have tiffs placed, as well as illustrator artwork.
When I try to print (hp1220c) in best/photopaper quality the printer locks up and won't print.
I have narrowed this down to 1 layer which is brushwork using green grass artbrush used in various sizes.
If I print with the grass layer turned off all is fine, If I print the grass layer with the other layers turned off it prints fine on its own.
Yet when I try to print with all layers showing the printers refuses to print after spooling.
Total file size less than 6 megs

I am using xp pro,
Adobe Illustrator CS
P4 with 1 gig ram 80gig*2 hd,s (almost empty)

Has anyone come across this problem before and can anyone please point me in the right direction.
