    Default Layers & seeing code behind page

    I just downloaded Contribute 4 trial version - couldn't find a Contribute 3
    trial version although I'd like to try it.
    1st question is regarding layers. I've done most of my current web site with
    a lot of overlapping layers so i can
    have text over lapping pics, etc... I can't seem to find a way to do that
    in Contribute 4. It just has stiff tables.
    2nd question is, I can't see the html code and I'd like to. I can't find an
    option that will let me see the codes while I'm working with a page. Does
    contribute let you do that or is it just a cut, paste and insert type program?
    Thank you

    When you use dreamweaver for creating your pages with the layers, maybe you
    could try creating editable regions in your layers and see how it reacts in
    Contribute. I haven't tried this so you should see for yourself if it works...

    Editable region looks like this:
    --------------------
    <body>
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="content" -->
    editable content
    <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
    </body>
    ----------------------

    Thanks for the advice. I'm using Front Page right now but I get what you mean.
    But that's my second problem, I can't seem to find a way to view the code
    and/or edit it on Contribute. It's almost like using a word processor program.
    I can add a table by clicking on tables, I can add pictures by clicking on add
    images, I can type text but for the life of me I can't find a way to view the
    daggone code!! lol If you could let me know if I'm just not seeing the option
    I'd appreciate it. If I can't view the code, I'm not wasting the money on the
    program.
    Thanks

    Hi Meeshka,

    You can edit the source code in an external application. You will have to edit
    the user role settings and the preferences. I'll try to point it out to you.

    First do this:
    1. in the menu choose Edit, Administer Websites
    2. choose the right website
    3. first option is Users and roles
    4. choose Edit Role Settings
    5. choose Editing
    6. make the option 'Allow users to edit in external application' active.
    7. OK

    So far so good. Now the seceond run:

    1. in the menu choose Edit, Preferences
    2. choose the option File editors
    3. go to the Extensions list and pick the option 'web page source'
    4. now add the program (your html editor) you want to use in the Editor list
    5. make it 'primary'
    6. OK, you're done

    Good luck,
    grtz Hayo

    Great question. I had found the option to edit in an external application in
    the File menu, and all my settings were correct. I tried it and got the
    following ubiquitous and uninformative error message:

    "An unknown error occurred in the Contribute file state manager."

    Help? I need my users to be able to have this option.

    Thanks!

    I reproduced the error by accident in this situation:
    I was not yet connected to the website, and there was an unpublished draft,
    when I started up Contribute.

    But after I connected and added Textpad as the default editor, I experienced
    no more trouble and can't seem to reproduce the error on purpose. So here we
    are... We now know that it's not textpad that produces the problem, but some
    ubiquitous and uninformative error in Contribute.

    I suggest you:
    Start Contribute
    Edit the file-edit preferences under Edit / Preferences again, so textpad is
    the default editor
    Close Contribute
    Start it again
    Connect the website
    Find your page to edit
    Then try to edit in external application File / Actions / Edit in external etc.

    Sorry I could not be of more help.

    grtz.

    Oh man. That was it! All I had to do was close Contribute and open it again. Duh, the oldest fix in the book and I didn't think of it. But thanks so much for replying to my concerns. :-)
