Layers hiding Javascript Menus
I am using layers for an "onclick" photo album with click activated thumbnails
displaying the images in a main viewing window. However, I also have a
Javascript navigation menu with drop down options that are now hidden behind
the main viewing window for the photo album. I'm not sure how to change either
the CSS or Javascript variables to bring the navigation menus to the top of the
page. Please help!

Re: Layers hiding Javascript Menus
I had the same sort of problem. I put the menu and the content - in my case a
flash movie - on seperate layers and then gave each a different z-index
(visibility order). I gave the menu a higher number than the content. It
works just fine. Also, there are several references in Dreamweaver Help on
using the z-index .
Hope this helps.

Re: Layers hiding Javascript Menus
Flash is unaffected by z-indices. See here -

You must be mistaken.

Re: Layers hiding Javascript Menus
Murray,
I have been known to be mistaken - more than once actually.
I did get a javascript menu to work over a swf. I have a sample at:
[url]http://stmark.cat4.net/MenuTest/Untitled-2.html[/url] .
I don't know if it works on Macs, but on all else it's fine. I don't know why
it works either. I was having trouble and changed the z-index and added the
wmode=transparent to the params and the embed tag. It didn't work that well in
Mozilla without the second wmode tag.
Kelind wasn't putting his menu over a .swf just an img tag, so I thought the
same method would work.
Cheers,
Stmark

Re: Layers hiding Javascript Menus
Did you look at the page I posted? Does that convince you that if your
method happened to work it was not because of adjusting z-index? In fact
that is the case. You are not using layers on that menu. Your only layer
is the one that contains the Flash text.

Re: Layers hiding Javascript Menus
Murray,
I did look at your page. Like I said "I don't know why it works". I don't
know how electicy works either. I just accept the fact it does. There are
actually 4 layers on the page - Layer1- t5n- and 3 "unnamed" layers that are
used by the css in the menu. Thus, I was able to set their z-index in
Dreamweaver. I'm obviously not a coder. The menu css and javascript are ones
I've modified from downloads. I've just tweaked them a bit to get them to work
in vaious browsers. Take a look at the css file if you like. Or, I'd be glad
to send you the entire file. Maybe, as an expert, you can figure out the "why"
of it. Then perhaps you could post a viable workaround for the many questions
on this topic I've run across lately.
Thanks,
stmark

Re: Layers hiding Javascript Menus
You're trying to trick me -
<param name="wmode" value="transparent">
You have already set the Flash to transparent background. Remove that from
your code, and try using z-index to change the appearance....

Re: Layers hiding Javascript Menus
Sorry, Not trying to trick anything but the browsers into displaying the menus
on top of flash. You are correct, of course, about the strict interpretation
of the z-index rules. I didn't doubt that. But, all I'm saying is that the
"one-two punch" of the z-index ordering and setting the wmode to transparent
seems to work. That's what I'm mainly interested in. I just stumbled across
the solution and thought I'd pass it on.
Thanks for the insight.

Re: Layers hiding Javascript Menus
Set the wmode to transparent and you will find it works regardless of the
z-index setting. That's my point.
And I didn't really mean that you were trying to trick me! 8)
