Layers palette

How can I collapse layers in the layers palette without other layers opening. Some files have dozens of layers nested 1 or 2 levels deep and it would be convenient to collapse them down to their basic (top level) categories. But, closing (collapsing) the top level layers often opens others
What am I doing wrong here?

You're not doing anything wrong. It's sometimes kind of erratic. We can all hope all the things wrong with the Layers palette are fixed soon.
