I can't tell you the details, but I think I can set you on the right
    path.
In your Utilities folder (in the Applications folder) open Directory
Access. Once you authenticate by clicking the lock and putting in your
password, click on LDAPv3 and then click configure. You're on your own
from here on out, but I believe this is where you need to go to get
    started.

.. . . thanks, I'd not seen that utility before. How does this differ
from setting up LDAP directories in Address Book though? - other than
that there seem to be more config options available in Directory Access,
including specs fo the type of LDPA directory. Setting up an LDAP server
as Active Directory doesn't seem to help me out here either.

I should perhaps also mention that I am already successfully hooked into
a couple of other OpenLDAP servers. All I used was the Address Book
prefs to set the server details. They work just fine. Can't seem to do
the same for this one local MS LDAP though. I have got as far as
connecting to it now (changed the scope to subtree), but a search of the
directory only brings back long strings of hexadecimal results and the
    search never finishes . . . hmmmmm.
