I am not sure what you're asking, but if you're asking what I _guess_ you're asking, then the longer flaps of the hood should correspond to longer sides of the frame. If you hold the camera in normal position (the frame is horizontal), the larger flaps will be directly above and below the lens opening. The shorter flaps will be to the lens' right and left. I am not sure what you're asking, but if you're asking what I
_guess_ you're asking, then the longer flaps of the hood should
correspond to longer sides of the frame. If you hold the

On a 35mm camera, the "larger" hoods will always be north/south,
because the film plane is rectangular laying on it's side horizontally
as you hold the camera in an "upright" (prism upward) position. The
whole reason they are "cut out" on the east/west sides are to prevent
vignetting with wider angle lenses. As a rule, most normal to
telephoto lenses will be entirely circular with no cutouts or notches,
and in fact some wide angle (often 35mm) lenses are completely
circular. In those cases, it doesn't matter how you mount the hood
unless it's only designed to go on a certain way. Most hoods that are
made by an OEM camera maker have some kind of marking (a red dot on
Canon hoods) to use to align them before installing on the lens.

The larger "petals" of scalloped hoods should be on the sides of the
lens that correspond to the narrowest dimension of the final image.
That is, if you are shooting 35mm in landscape orientation, with the
longer dimension horizontal, the larger petals should be on the top and
bottom of the lens, and the smaller petals should be on the sides.

Often the hood will have a logo or something on it; this logo should
usually face up when the hood is mounted.
