Default Light Sources

I have a simple geometric object that I would like to illuminate with an imaginary light source. I do not want the imaginary 'light' source to be seen but I want have it creating shadows and highlights on the object.

any ideas are welcome....

For the area to be highlighted you could:
- Use a radial fill on the object
- Create an oval or circle with a white fill and feathered edges, then
adjust the transparency and lay it over top of the object. Use the skew
or other tools to modify the highlight shape.

For the shadowed area you could use the Drop Shadow from Live Effects.
You could also create a circle, polygon, or other appropriate shape,
apply a linear fill to it, feather the edge, and lay it under the object.

There are many, many ways to achieve this. Check out the link below for
some sites that may help. Community MX has a specific article showing
perspective shadow techniques. You can get a free trial membership, or
buy specific articles. You could also just check out their free content
as well.

Multiple inner shadows/inner glows would normally do the job. These
effects can be applied in any color, so you can use white or light shades
for highlights and black or dark shades for shadows. The chrome sphere on my
web site at http://www.richiebee.ca/ping.htm gives an idea of what I'm
talking about, though not a lot of thought went into the directional element
of light source in these - it was only for effect. If I was to put more
thought into it, I could come up with something more accurate.

I think I'd need to know more information, like shape and type of light
source to be more specific with an answer here...

Sorry... hadn't been awhile since I had been to the site. And hadn't see
this before.

"All objects, sample files, styles and templates are the work of Richard
Blenkinsopp, and copyrights apply where they exist. Please feel free to use
the styles for your own personal use, but do not distribute them or offer
them on your own web site without permission and credit. Templates are
intended for you to see styles in context. Use them on your own computer for
the purposes of experimentation only and please do not use the templates for
live web sites or other display products (eg, CD or DVD) without permission.
Downloading files from this site constitutes your understanding and
agreement to abide by these rules."

Does the live site clause apply for styles derived from your styles? I think
I may be using a modified style of yours on a graphical text element on a
site I am working on and just want to make sure this isn't going to cause
any problems. Site isn't live yet.... just local on my machine. Usually a
stickler about this sort of stuff (along with font and clipart usage).

Cheers,
Sam

Hi Sam,

You must think I'm some kind of meanie... far from it. Here's how it
goes...

If you are creating (and if applicable, selling) a web site that utilizes my
styles, you're not re-distributing my styles. You're using my styles to
create your own work and that's fine, you're not violating the agreement. If
you were to re-distribute the styles themselves, you would be violating the
agreement.

The same goes with the sample files and templates on my web site. The main
object of this agreement is to avoid others passing my work off as their
own, whether for money or not.

If you need further clarification, drop me an e-mail at rich@richiebee.ca. I
don't feel that this forum is the right place to discuss the ins and outs of
my personal web site.

Just wanted to make sure I was still treading the straight and narrow....
life gets wobbly enough as it is.

That pretty much covers everything nicely. I would't have brought it up at
all or would have done it offlist, except for the fact that there are a
fair amount of pointers from this forum to the Fireworks section of your
webpage. Figured the clarification might serve others too. If I was the
only confused duckling.... so be it. Nothing new there ;o)

Looking forward to the Devnet article :o)

Cheers,
Sam
