Line, Rectanle, Ellipse Bug - Adobe Illustrator Windows

Experiencing strange behaviour of drawing tools in AI CS2 (12.0.1) - When using any of the drawing tools (Line, Arc, Spiral, Grid, Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, Star) dragging the cursor across the artboard (vs clicking once and defining dimensions by numbers) produces multiple instances of increasing size (following the cursor) of the selected tool (i.e. if starting a rectangle at the top-left corner and dragging diagonally, I get 10-20 smaller rectanles inside the big one). Any suggestions appreciated....

This is what happens when you drag a shape while holding down the tilde key. Maybe your tilde key is stuck. steve

This is an intentional feature if you hold down the tilde key while dragging. If it is happening while you are not holding down the tilde key, it may be some kind of corruption. Have you tried deleting your Preferences file?

Could also be a video driver issue, though. Do the rectangles stay if you scale up or down, or do they disappear?

Don't know if the tilde key was stuck before, but using the line tool WITH the tilde key once (thus drawing many lines) seems to have resolved the problem - the next time around all tools behaved normally. Thanks for your help and suggestions.
