Linked images and Illustrator file size - Adobe Illustrator Windows

I'm working on a flyer that has five linked images. Without any linked images, the file is a reasonable 2.5 mb. However, once I start linking images, the file rapidly balloons to 85 mb. I was under the impression that linking images helped to keep the file size down, but this does not seem to be the case here. Am I doing something wrong here? Is there any way I can reduce the file size to soemthing more manageable?...

If you are saving with PDF compatibility, you are effectively saving two
versions of the file, and .ai with linked images and a .pdf with
embedded images. PDF ALWAYS embeds images (for obvious reasons)

Len, thanks for the suggestion. I tried resaving without PDF compatibility, and it didn't change the file size too much. It's still about 80 mb.

    Brad,

Try saving to a new filename without the PDF compatibility.

Turns out that even though I placed the images as a "linked" file, when I saved with PDF compatibility the first time, it converted the files to embedded. I had to delete the files by hand and reinsert them as linked, but when I saved the *.ai file again, I was careful not to select PDF compatibility, and it worked. Down from 80 mB to only 841 kB. Thanks for your help!
