    Default Links playing up

I havn't been able to find any info on this yet and am hoping to find someone that has similar problems or ideas on preventing it. The average configuration of the computers we are experiencing this on are: Dual 2Ghz G5 PowerMacs between 1 - 2 GB RAM, Mac OS X.3 thru to OS X.4.7, InDesign CS2 v4-4.0.2.

    The Problems

    1. Linked files just disappearing from the links palette, not embedding, just not there. When you click on the image there is no link information at all, you can't relink the image or show in finder etc... This will happen only sometimes after an image needs to be updated for no apparent reason.

    2. Have a linked Photoshop EPS file, have resaved the file as Photoshop and relinked it in the links palette, it then appears twice in the links palette once as OK the 2nd time as requiring updating, no matter how many times you update the image it, the triangle with ! wont disappear, using the select content button in the toolbar you can click through the container but when you find the one that requires updating and delete it, both images disappear.

I have experienced this problem in 2 different workplaces on at least 5 different macs, If you have even experienced this I'd like to hear from you as I am going mad trying to figure it out.

Dylan, the best way to use EPS files in InDesign is to the have InDesign rasterize the in-document preview from postscript. (Avoids some issues with EPS previews and drop shadows.) To get it going, start to import an EPS and choose "Show Import Options" in the Open dialog and then select the "Rasterize from Postscript" radio button. We save the EPS's with TIFF previews when we make them too; that way they are compatible if you have to place the file XPress for some reason.

This is driving me nuts, I have resaved every image that didn't have a preview in our catalogues with 8bit mac preview. We are still having the same problems, it seems that saving with preview has helped but nowhere near enough to solve our problem completely. We do 2 versions of our catalogue that often use the same images in both and there has been an example of an image that in one catalogue it creates 2 links, and in the other none whatsover. Please don't tell me that one catalogue is pinching the other catalogues link ;-)
