Can ASP pages be executed in the Linux environment? If so, can IIS be still be used as the server? If not, which server has to be
used to execute ASP pages in Linux?

Once upon a time, Director supported playback on a range of OSs - such as
Mac, Win, OS/2 and Personal IRIS. I dont think there was ever a playback
'native' engine for Linux, though (but you might get playback via an
emulator)

How difficult would it be to port a MacOS X app to ('86-based) Linux? Google,
google, ah! http://www.matrixlist.com/pipermail/leaplist/2002-March/018721.html
suggests that with a little forward planning it should be "easy".
There seems to be a lot of effort into going the other way.
OTOH, MM are experienced enough to know to not count their chickens before
they've crossed the road.

That is true, but most of the linux users i know hate them for it :)

Joking aside though it surely has to come soon more and more people i
know are using linux rather than windoze, and i live in a cultural and
technological backwater ;) . I would have thought, with linux being
open source it shouldn't provide too many problems for xtra
developers.

Where's the GUI in Director? I see a message window for typing things in like
member(1).scripttext="on mouseUp...." and another window titled "Stage" where
things appear. Have I missed something? It looks like the things under the
"Window" menu should do something, but all I get is a thin line down the edge of
the window when I choose "Paint" or whatever<g>

Curses! you've now put idea of trying to develop a project from the

Not problems persay but more work to produce, another example would be
BuddyAPI for linux :) That would be a nightmare, especailly for windows
commands where it would have to take into account the windows manager in
question (I've not done much coding for Linux , mainly for command line apps
but I would have thought that this might cause a bit of hastle)

I know what you mean about Linux users and the command line, and in 'many'
cases for good reasons. It can be a lot faster to code for example without
having to use the mouse. I just don't think its faster or anywhere near as
good for 90% of the tasks that computers need to do in this modern era
(Going on a bit a tangent here I feel).

Just out of interest, how many people use Linux just because its not
Microsoft?
I know quite a few who are like that, including my dear old father.

Anyway must get back to the point

I think that Linus users would adapt easier to Director than a lot of new
users under Windows and the Mac simply because Linux requires at least some
knowlege of scripting etc to simply use it, whilst many windows users have
simply used art packages etc and have never touched code in their lives

I assume you must use the mac then Andrew, MX under windows certianly is GUI
based for begginers, infact I didn't realise what the message window was for
for quite some time. I simply hit the script window button and worked from
their. But I know what you mean it is possible to code stuff under director
without ever needing to use most of the GUI features, I usually do.

you can try under wine or (comertial) winex. I have also read something
about Flash 4 Linux (f4lm) on sourceforge, finally got it to compile and
install, but I haven't tested it yet.
