Default Local Editing of HTML files

I'm trying to use CS3 to edit files held on my local hard drive before ftp-ing
them to my website. I connect to the directory quite happily and can navigate
normally using the internal browser. But after editing a page, and publishing
it back, I can no longer access the page via either the internal browser or IE.

Now here's the really curious bit. If I zip up all the files, then unzip them
into a new directory, I can connect to it and edit pages (but not publish them
back) quite normally. This problem is driving me crazy and making the use of
    Contribute both innefficient and unproductive.

Has anyone got any idea as to what's causing this (the edit/publish back
problem) and how to avoidf this problem?
    Many thanks in advance.

Hi Ian, which part of CS3 are you using? I think that you may be refering to Contribute? Is this correct?

Sorry about that; it is specifically 'Contribute' that I'm having the problems
    with.

As a general comment, is local editing of html files commonplace, or was
Contribute only ever intended for interacting with an actual website?
