Location/Reporting Patterns - MySQL

Hi all, This probably is not possible using pure SQL, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Is there a way to calculate and report the number of times (in succession) a value appears in a resultset? For example, assuming the following data: 1 W 2 W 3 W 4 L 5 W 6 L 7 L The result would be W 3 L 1 W 1 L 2 Everything I've found seems to want to combine the values of 'W' and 'L' into the same count value, so maybe it isn't possible. Thanks in advance, --...

    Hi all,

    This probably is not possible using pure SQL, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

    Is there a way to calculate and report the number of times (in succession) a value
    appears in a resultset?

    For example, assuming the following data:

    1 W
    2 W
    3 W
    4 L
    5 W
    6 L
    7 L

    The result would be

    W 3
    L 1
    W 1
    L 2

    Everything I've found seems to want to combine the values of 'W' and 'L' into the same
    count value, so maybe it isn't possible.

    Thanks in advance,

    With shell:

    $ cat file
    1 W
    2 W
    3 W
    4 L
    5 W
    6 L
    7 L

    $ uniq -f1 -c file|awk 'NF>2{print $3, $1}'
    W 3
    L 1
    W 1
    L 2

    Okay, thanks. I thought there might be a solution available in SQL that I could
    implement as a view, but I'll have to look at implementing something similar to this.
