Default Losing grips on Illustrator 9 images and text boxes

For no ascertainable reason, in the last month my copy of Illustrator 9 will randomly dissappear the grips that are used to resize and stretch placed images and/or text boxes.
The only way I have been able to get the grips back is to reload the entire Illustrator program onto my computer.
These grips are entirely different from the Free Transform grips....the grips I'm speaking of are the standard grips that usually will appear on every highlighted piece.

How do I get these back w/o having to reinstall the software every few days?

    Thanks,
    David

    Thanks Timothy.
I would have checked other sources first, except I did not know the proper term for those grips...now I do.
    Appreciate it.

Fair enough. Help/search aren't very helpful if you don't know the name of what you're looking for.

    You're welcome. :)
