lost copy of website
I would really appreciate some help. I had kept a copy of
my website compressed on a floppy. I now cannot retrieve
it. Does that mean I have to start all over again or is
there some way that I can recover it from the website
itself? It has taken me months to design it as I was a
complete novice and it had about 25 pages.
Anxiously awaiting a response!
Thanks in anticipation.

If you created your site with Publisher and it is gone, yes you will need to
start over again. I know the feeling, it happened to me.

Re: lost copy of website
Actually, Publisher 2002 is supposed to be able to import html and work on it as
a "native language". My limited experience with this was not to good, however.
I am not sure about Publisher 2003 in this regard.
Are you sure you do not have the original publisher files? You do not need the
htm or html files if the site was created in Publisher.
In any event, download the actual files from the server now to protect against
disaster until you figure out what you want to do. This might be a good time to
abandon Publisher and import the source code into Front Page or Dreamweaver and
patch it up. At 25 pages, you are already pushing the limit in Publisher,
especially if you are in Publisher 2003 (bloated code problem).
Good luck.

Re: lost copy of website
Thanks so much for that. I am using Publisher 2000. I am
not anticipating expanding the site, neither do I think
(but I don't know for sure) that it uses a lot of memory. I
am really an absolute novice and if I had known what
wonderful support there was here, I would have saved myself
days of frustration figuring things out.
So, the truth is I haven't a clue whether I have HTML
files, neither do I understand source code. I am very
grateful for your suggestion to download my site (I may
just about be able to do that!) in case of disaster.
However, I do not know how to you Front page and I started
to learn Dreamweaver, which given time I am sure I would
have come to grips with, but it just takes so long to start
from scratch. So, if I can transfer something straight in
there, I could just try to fiddle with it!
At the moment, I still have the original on 4 floppies,
compressed, but floppy 2 or 3 does not want to unpack and
therefore Publisher cannot open it. Do you know any way in
which I can rescue what might be left?
Thank you in anticipation.

Re: lost copy of website
A pub site is contained within the Pub file itself so it is the important
file, not the html files on the server, they can always be recreated from
the Pub file. Though 2002 and 2003 do open html files.
I'd be willing to try some experimentation with versions 2002 and 2003 if
you post the URL of the site.

Re: lost copy of website
Nah, no good. 2002 pretty much trashes it. 2003 does a better job but
there'd still be so much fix-up work you'd just as well start over. And in
both cases you lose the menu bar.
Thing is the "ability" to open html files in Pub is designed for opening the
html files that version created, and in it's xml mode at that. Rather than
"other" html files.
I down-loaded the web site. If you wanted to send me your email address I
could send you the files. You can either open the web in FrontPage and then
proceed as is (FrontPage edits actual html files rather then use a
"middle-man" file i.e. .pub file) or you could copy paste the text into a
new Publisher web file starting over.
Let me know (email - pub2003@davidbartosik.com)

Thanks for that DavidF. I have had a go, but cannot copy
either as two of the four floppies cannot be read (get
