Lost manual resize mode -- entirely - Adobe Illustrator Windows

I've suddenly completely lost access to manual-resize mode for all objects in doents new or old. Clicking on any shape with a select arrow turns on a blue bounding box, but resize handles will not appear. Clicking on text causes the text to have a blue underline, but no bounding box. Objects can still be resized through the menu. This is obviously a loss of core functionality that I need for my work. Is there a solution short of uninstalling and re-installing? The resize mode failure persists after re-starting Windows and starting Illustrator again. Win XP, Gateway laptop, 504 MB ...

You've accidentally turned off bounding boxes.

View | Show Bounding Box (Ctrl+Shift+B) in AI 10.

    Aha.

So I haven't encountered a serious bug, and now I'm back to biz.

    Imagine how good that feels.

Thanks very much for the prompt reply.

Or the FAQs; this is #6, but #2 would solve it, too, along with other strangenesses.

So would formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows and AI, Jacob.

Trashing prefs to toggle the bounding box back on is questionable advice in my opinion.

    Harron,

    in my opinion.

I agree, of course, unless other things go awry at the same time: if the user has not done anything to hide the BB, it may be part of an AIPrefs corruption; I believe it happens (Ctrl+Shift+B is more than most cats can manage; well, one of ours was able to start up IE and perform a Google search for nnnnnn...).

But it was not meant as advice, just a statement of a curiousity.

Well, that's good to hear, Jacob. I'd hate to see you go in for a stomach transplant when a bicarbonate would do the job.

I think Quark and InDesign users find themselves with this problem in AI if they habitually use Ctrl+Shift+B to bold text.
