Low quality PDF imports in InDesign

I work for a publishing company where we just started using InDesign for our publications. Advertisers sometimes send ads in PDF format. When I try to import them into InDesign CS2, the quality is very poor. The text is distorted and the graphics are grainy. When I import the same file into Illustrator it looks fine, exactly like it does as a PDF. I've tried copying and pasting the ad, saving it as a JPG and EPS, and saving it in Illustrator, and the results are always about the same.

Am I going to have to re-create the final document in Illustrator, or is there something in InDesign that will make the PDFs import better?

Check your view settings and make sure it's high quality.

I agree with Bob. InDesign has the best PDF handling of any page-layout program, particularly with its on-screen display of placed PDFs. Change your view settings (View\Display Performance\High Quality Display) and I think everything will suddenly come into focus.

Phew! Thank goodness. I was having the same problem and starting to panic as it is almost 4 AM and my file is due at 8 AM. Thanks for the pointer. Cleared the viewing issue up. :-)

Changing to "High Quality Display" makes all different.
