AFTER A 2 HOUR CONVERSATION...IT WAS THE PREFERENCES FOLDER THAT WAS CORRUPTED!

    WORKS NOW!

Glad you got it sorted. 'Trash the prefs' is a universal panacea for odd
behaviour. It doesn't always work, but it's always worth a try as an early
    remedy.

I have been playing with the new ID CS2 tonight. I never had the "Pagemaker" version of ID because I switched from Pagemaker 6.5 to ID 1.5 a long time ago. After ID2, I never went back.

I don't remember a merge function as part of the old Pagemaker. Was that added with the ID3 Pagemaker version, or was it in PM7?

I really like the merge function. I didn't even know it was there until I found this thread.

One comment: Why the H*11 does anybody keep a mailing list in Excel? Excel is a spreadsheet made for crunching numbers, doing amortization schedules, and calculating complex math problems. IT IS NOT A DATABASE PROGRAM!!! If you have Excel, you probably have the MS Suite that also has Access. Access IS a DATABASE program. Access is MADE for mailing lists. USE IT!

Sorry, but one of my pet peeves is using the WRONG tool for a task. You can use a rock to drive a nail, but why would you do that when a hammer is available? Some people actually lay out books in Word! WHY? Wrong tool for the job!

The "merge" function was added to PageMaker in its last version, version 7.

Although Excel is definitely not a "database," in fact, most databases have export functions to Excel or one of its input formats, such as tab-delimited field text files. For "small" databases, it is often convenient to export to such a tab-delimited field text file and import same to Excel and "muck" with the fields in Excel before bring same into a publishing program.

For the record, most users of Microsoft Office under Windows do NOT have Access. Only the "Professional" version of Office has Access and most users do not have that version.

Although I strongly agree with your assertion vis-a-vis use of the right tool for a task, many database systems are simply too complex to program to produce output directly for publishing programs and/or the publishing program has no easy or direct access (pun intended) to the database. Excel spreadsheet are a reasonable intermediary for many small jobs.
