Mail & VPN (&MT-NewsWatcher as well) - Mac Applications & Software

When I have VPN connected to the office, mail can't send mail. I suspect it probably wants to send mail via my office mailer. Is that the case and if so how do I find its name? It is an NT4 server running whatever mail NT4 servers use. I have a similar problem with MT-NewsWatcher. It can access the MicroSoft news server but not my local news server. Again, I think this may be because it is going through the office and my local news doesn't allow that. Is there a way around either/both of these problems? For some reason ...

For some reason AOL Instant Messenger doesn't seem to be bothered. This
may be because it uses its own server.

There are any number of reasons why this might be happening:

    1. Firewall configuration
    2. NT configuration (what can be passed via VPN to local net)
    3. VPN configuration (what ports VPN permits)

And so on. As for mail, NT quite often means MS Exchange, but it
will talk SMTP to you, if it's configured to do so and the VPN
    rules allow it.

What kinds of error messages are you receiving? Can you ping and/or
traceroute to the servers you are trying to reach?
