Mail.app, SMTP AUTH, & AOL - Mac Networking

Hello, AOL recently provided its membership with an authenticated SMTP server. This server works fine in Entourage and Mozilla, but not Mail.app. I fired up tcpflow to see what was different. I've changed the encrypted data to protect my login information, but I've maintained the connections between the three attempts (ie: ENCRYPTED_DATA_3 is the same text in multiple examples). Hello,

AOL recently provided its membership with an authenticated SMTP server.
This server works fine in Entourage and Mozilla, but not Mail.app.

I fired up tcpflow to see what was different. I've changed the
encrypted data to protect my login information, but I've maintained the
connections between the three attempts (ie: ENCRYPTED_DATA_3 is the same
    text in multiple examples).

Any ideas? Who is in the wrong here, Mail.app or the SMTP server?

MD5 and the two Kerberos options both complain that the server doesn't
support them. And the server requires authentication, so "None" isn't
    an option.

It appears the SMTP server is using some variant of LOGIN authentication even when
told to use PLAIN authentication. Mozilla is playing along whereas
Mail doesn't get it. The SMTP server is in the wrong. Unfortunately
I don't think there's any way to force Mail to use LOGIN rather than
    PLAIN.
