Default Major props to this NG

Although I've been on-line since compuserv, I'm new to Flash developing.
After finding this NG accidentally, I just wanted to congratulate y'all on
your friendliness and willingness to help strangers. There's no sarcasm, no
insults...just eagerness to lend a hand.

Thanks to all....I'm looking forward to the time when I can return the
    favor.

(btw - what's the ancestral relationship between Director, Lingo, Flash &
actionscript, if any? The timeline & tweening remind me of this other
    Macromedia tool)

Flash was originally developed by a separate company and then bought by
Macromedia before they released version 1. The timeline use in Flash and
Director is due to them both being geared towards people with
    traditional animation experience.

Scripting in Flash was first called Flash script, but as macromedia
mover it to utilize a more and more ecmascript (javascript) compliant
syntax it was renamed to actionscript.

Director was initially geared more towards authoring cd based and
desktop based applications and utilizes Lingo. As the web scarted
gaining more promis in the early to mid nineties the ability to generate
web based content via shockwave was added. This was started before
Macromedia aquired Flash as I recall, but since Director has a broader
target audience (both web and applications) It was continued since it
    was a more powerful app.

With time Flash has gained a lot more capabilities, but Director still
has advantages when it is necessary to interact more with the end users
system (ie, joysticks, touch screens, the Filesystem, etc) or when true
3D is needed or desired (Flash can only simulate 3D at this time)

So hopefully that helps answer your question. :)
