make menuconfig weird for kernel build - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

I'm trying to build a realtime kernel and when I do a make menuconfig, the choices are very limited. There are only two menu items and do not really reflect my conguration. Any suggestions. I'm doing this in RH 9.0 with the instructions provided at <http://www.opentech.at/howtos/multiboot-howto/html/install_en_2.html>. See step 2.7. -- Wayne T. Watson (121.015 Deg. W, 39.262 Deg. Are you doing it as root....?

Your sig is WAY out of line.

The limit is 4 lines below the delimeter "-- ".

Sigs are not supposed to dominate posts, they are supposed to be,
    well, _sigs_.....

The Usenet is NOT your personal bulletin board.

Killfiled for a month. As you will be every time I see that gross sig.

Yes, as root. I can send you lots of clues. For example, the my_config files in the
two steps. 2.7 (rtlinux) is about 50 lines and 2.4 (linux) is about 900 lines. I wish
I could capture the image of make myconfig in step 2.7. It has 2 entries. Step 2.4's
has about 20. Something is amiss. My best guess at the moment is that it has to do
with the fact that I have w2000 on the primary and linux on the secondary. To boot, I
have to selection during the BIOS boot, which of the two devices, primary or
secondary. I used Grub instead of LILO in the in howto instructions. Normal linux
works OK, but rtlinux is bad news. I had to switch the using interchanging hd0 with
hd1 in the grub.conf file. That is, BIOS thinks hdb is really hd0 when I try to boot
    from the secondary.

make myconfig in step 2.7 is mightily fooled somehow.
