    Default Making a picture/layer transparent

Newbie here, I don't know much of the Flash lingo, but I am trying to
make a graphic transparent so that the background will show through.
The back ground and graphic are two seperate layers. Any help you
could give would be massively appreciated!

convert your graphics to a movieclip or a graphic symbol.

    - select the graphic
    - hit F8
    - name it (fx. mcPicture)
    - choose Movieclip or Graphic
    - ok

back to the main stage, click the graphic to select it, and look at the
options in the properties bar at the bottomof flash. You should be able to
choose "alpha", use it's slider, and make your graphic transparent.

I have a background image I want to trace over, so I thought I would put the reference image on top, as a transparent layer. BUT...the properties icons don't show up on either my reference layer, or the layer I'm drawing on. I can get the icon to show up if I try to access an image from the library, but not when I'm actually clicking on a layer. Then that info bar is just not there.

    What am I missing?
