    1. One can make images transparent. But one can only apply transparency
to GIFs and PNGs and has to make them transparent in e. g. Photo
Shop or Photo Editor first. JPGs won't work (no transparency possible).

    2. I still use Macromedia Flash MX and there one can do it like this:

In a SWF file, any image can have transparency (JPEG or not). However,
Flash itself is limited in what you can do with images. Other SWF authoring
tools give you more control, so you can do things like set the transparency
color(s) for an image (JPEG or not).

With external PNG and GIF file (assuming you have a decent paint/photo
application that supports transparency), the transparency info can be kept
in the original image itself, so you don't need Flash to set up the
transparency. PNG also allows for partial transparency in an image (GIF
only allows for a paritcular color to be rendered as fully transparent).

NOTE: GIF, BMP, PNG etc format don't exist as such in a SWF file .. there is
only zipped bitmap image (with alpha) and jpeg compressed image (with
alpha). The imported format is lost on export (except that you can
optionally directly copy non-progressive jpeg image date from imported file
    to the swf)
    >> 2. Is i possible to make a object (created in flash) transparent?
Yes .. just change its alpha value (in script or in the timeline). This is
very easy to do. NOTE: the alpha changes for the whole object in this case.

Wow, these answers have been pretty longwinded for such a simple question.

Martin, you can make any object, picture, whatever transparent by first
clicking Insert: Convert to symbol. Convert to a graphic, button, or movie
clip. Then click on the object and look at the properties window. There is
a pulldown called 'color.' Click on "alpha" and adjust as needed.
