yeah, i also want to know if there is an easy way to do this that i'm overlooking... for example, if i have a rectangle behind my text, i want it to change width based on the length of the text. is this possible?

Sorry, guys!
It's just not possible in FW. If you intend to use buttons of a uniform size, you will need to set the buttons to a size which will contain the longest text label you intend using in your navbar. For a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, you could try to avoid using abbreviations (e.g. use "Information", rather than "Info"). That may help to balance things up a bit.

One way you could do it is to slice the graphic up and use a section of it
to tile in HTML and either using CSS or adding it to the background property
of a <td> tag. You just need to have your text added after you build the
button.
John MC posted this tutorial on a similar question. Think of this banner as
your button.
