    Default making thunderbird and firefox default in kubuntu

    I have a Kubuntu installed. My wife likes KDE,but I prefer fluxbox. In
    flux, I use firefox and thunderbird. The problem is, clicing in a link
    in an email (in thunderbird) causes the link to open in Konqy. And
    clicking on a mailto: in firefox causes kmail to fire up. How can I
    change this behavior? I don't see an option in the preferences tab of
    either.

    Thanks,

    I reckon it's a fluxbox setting. In KDE, IIRC, the setting is found in
    ~/.kde, so perhaps have a look for ~/fluxbox or similar?

    fluxbox is just a wm not a desktop environment, so I don't think that is
    the case. I did check the .fluxbox folder, but nothing. I have used
    flux for a while, and don't recall that being a configurable setting.
    Maybe a compile time thing?

    Does Ubuntu respect $BROWSER or $DEFAULTBROWSER? Type "set" at the
    bash prompt and see if either of those come up in the list.

    In Firefox type "about:config" and look for this line:

    network.protocol-handler.app.mailto

    Right click on it and choose 'Modify' then enter the path to the
    Thunderbird executable.

    I'm not sure about Thunderbird > Firefox.

    Try changing the defaults in KDE. I don't use Fluxbox, but it sounds like
    it's using the KDE defaults.

    On my system they are changed by choosing "System Settings" from the KDE
    menu (you'll have to log in to KDE first, of course), then "User Account",
    then "Default Applications."

    There should be a 'prefs.js' file in your /home/~/.Thunderbird/xwz.default
    directory. Open it up with Thunderbird closed and look for these lines and
    modify them accordingly and see if that works:

    user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.ftp", "/path/to/Firefox");
    user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http", "/path/to/Firefox");
    user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https", "/path/to/Firefox");

    Or if you don't want to mess about with the prefs.js file you can create
    your own called "user.js" and put the same 3 lines (followed by a
    carriage return and then saved)

    I *think* this should work but YMMV :-)

    This worked. My prefs.js did not have these lines, so I added them, and
    it works now.

    For others trying this, make sure you close thunderbird first as it
    overwrites your changes on close. Also it is in the
    ..mozilla-thunderbird folder, not .thunderbird.

    I was going on my memory of my Mandriva LE2005 install. It seems that
    different distros have different names for some directories.

    All these Firefox/Thundebird tips and tricks and more can be yours for
    only 10 pounds sterling, in a plain brown envelope, left behind the
    water pipe in the third stall, men's lavatory, Victoria station and
    a few minutes with Google :-)

    Glad it worked out, I made a note to myself and put it in a tips file
    in my misc docs folder :-)
