Masking Question - Macromedia Fireworks

I've got a bitmap image that I'd like to apply a linear gradient to. Maybe some scan lines too. I've found that if I add a mask using the button at the bottom of the Layers panel and then apply a gradient using the gradient tool, I can't alter the gradient properties after it's applied. Make sense ?...

That's because what you are adding is a "bitmap mask" rather than a vector
mask. Essentially you're using bitmap tools to create the gradient.

To make the mask editable, draw the mask shape with one of the vector tools
(Pen, Rectangle, Ellipse, etc) instead, and fill THAT shape with a
gradient. Select both objects and go to MODIFY>MASK>GROUP AS MASK. This will
group the bitmap and the vector gradient shape. You can then use the cursor
to select the Mask in the Layers Panel, and with the mask active, you will
have all your properties at your disposal.
