maximum number of layers exporting from Illustrator to Photoshop

I have an image in Illustrator (9.0) that I want to export to Photoshop (6.0). The images contains 198 layers. When I go through the export process, I get a message saying that: "This file can not be opened in Photoshop 5.x because it has a 100 layer limitation". Now looking in my photoshop book, it states that (depending on memory of computer) you may have a maximum of 8000 layers. So how do I adjust the number of layers that can be exported, or how do I overcome this issue?

8000 is the absolute limit in Photoshop 7 (but the engineers suggest keeping
the total to 800 or less due to, uh, certain speed issue above 800 layers or
so). Previous versions were limited to 99.

You will need to 'lose' some layers in the Illustrator file

I'm only looking to export 198 layers, well below the 800 that you mention. See the message in my original post about the 100 layer limit.

Photoshop 6 has a 99 layer limit. So you have two choices, either lose some
layers or update to the current version of Photoshop,
