You've deleted the (main) partition table, which occupies 64 bytes in the
MBR, hence the symptoms you describe. Assuming you didn't back up the
sector you deleted first, you need to: (1) create some sort of boot
sector, typically by using Lilo or Grub. (2) recreate the partition table.
It's quite feasible to do this manually, but painful, or you could try
using a program like gpart (
http://public.www.planetmirror.com/pub/gpart/ ), which attempts to do this
automatically for you. I've had limited experience with gpart, so use at
your own risk. Gpart is available with the likes of Knoppix and LNX-BBC,
which would probably be helpful in your situation.
