media size versus crop size
We accept PDF files for the production of high resolution films from our imagesetter. We normally just drag the files to the appropriate folder on the RIP for output and the RIP uses the page size set in the PDF. However, we sometimes get files that have an incorrect media size set in the PDF. The media is much larger than necessary to contain the image. Sometimes when we crop from within Acrobat we can't eliminate this incorrect page size. Saving as does not correct the size either. We have been able to open in Illustrator and resave to correct the problem but this is a time consuming process. We can print from Acrobat but this requires us to set a page size for each and every job.

Re: media size versus crop size
If this is a problem that has any consistency - so if you always received the files from the same client with the same oversized media then you set up a batch process to automatically generate a new PDF.
Once again if the consistency was there then you could set a process for each offending client.
This would still require some human intervention however.
You could always slap the wrists of your clients and ask them politely not to do it again :)

Re: media size versus crop size
The same client may send 10-12 files produced by the same host application and only 1 will have the wrong size. If I open the PDF, crop and then save as a new file my RIP still sees the larger media size. The only way that I can remove this larger media size is to open in Illustrator and then save as PDF.

Re: media size versus crop size
Hi Jim. I have this problem with some of my clients. You can place the pdf in a Layout program and generate a new postscript file (I usualy use InDesign). Other way is if you have Quite Imposing Plus for Acrobat (this is a plug-in). This plug-in have an option named Shift and Trim, who realy crop media to real crop margins...
