    Default Memory to Photoshop question

Yes, this has been hammered before with the set it not to excede 70% standard answer. I read those as they came out. But...

I have been running 512 meg memory working with files normally between 20 and 60 meg. I added a couple of memory eating plugins namely Focus Magic and Mystical Tint and Tone. I know that many here have the knowledge to use the standard Photoshop tools to do what they do. I don't and need the crutches.

    M. T. T. especially is a memory hog.

    I added a 256 meg PC2100 chip/card to the 512 today. That made a noticeable difference.

Assuming I have carried out all the basic Photoshop work, saved, closed, then reopened the file before running M. T. T. and the file is 50 meg, How many meg will Photoshop need to act as a "picture loader and plug-in caller upper"?

Set it to 70% of the original 512 Meg to let the new chip be completely dedicated to the plugins?

    M. T. T. seems to be a stand-alone program being called up to run under Photoshop rather than a conventional plugin.

    Thank you,
    Bill

What OS are you running? I routinely used a 92% (of 768Mb) memory allocation for PS when I ran Win98 with no ill effects. In W2k, I use 50% to 70%. I really think you should experiment with this setting to find what works best for you. One size does not fit all.

I had no problems under 98-SE with a setting of 90% until I added Genuine Fractales. Then I had to drop it down to 72%.

This is the replacement computer running Windows XP-Home with 3/4 gig total chip memory and plenty (10 gig +) on several drives that Photoshop preferences have been set to use. Photoshop is V. 7.01.

GHZ is not a RAM specification.

Perhaps you meant BucketFull, the correct technical term :-)

If a BucketFull of RAM is not available, substitute a BucketFull of RUM. It won't help your computer, but it will do wonders for you.
