merge two table's data with variables - MySQL

Hello guys, I'm tying to merge data from one table to another. It's a little bad practice I know but it's like follows; |a|b| |c|d| |a|b|c|d| |e|f| |e|f|c|d| |g|h| |g|h|c|d| |i|j| |i|j|c|d| now I was hoping to use variables eg v1 = c, v2 = d but i'm struggling to assign v1 = select t2.col1, v2 = select t2.col2 so that I can do a; set t1.col3 = v1 It's not happy. any ideas?...

    Default merge two table's data with variables

    Hello guys, I'm tying to merge data from one table to another. It's a
    little bad practice I know but it's like follows;

    |a|b| |c|d| |a|b|c|d|
    |e|f| |e|f|c|d|
    |g|h| |g|h|c|d|
    |i|j| |i|j|c|d|

    now I was hoping to use variables eg v1 = c, v2 = d
    but i'm struggling to assign

    v1 = select t2.col1,
    v2 = select t2.col2

    so that I can do a;

    set t1.col3 = v1

    It's not happy. any ideas?

    The SET statement can set the value of a variable, or a config
    parameter, but not columns in a table. You need to use UPDATE for that.

    You might find it easiest to use a multi-table UPDATE. Then you won't
    have to use variables at all.

    For example:

    UPDATE t1, t2
    SET t1.col3 = t2.col1
    WHERE t1.col2 = t2.col2

    Or whatever conditions you can use to relate rows in the two tables, as
    though you were doing a join in a SELECT.
