If you're using a library item in that many pages, you'll never be happy
with a library item. You really should investigate using SSI, or a database.

SSI is an option for some but it may not be for me.

In order for SSI to work, I would have to:
    1. Change the extension of every file to *.shtml and adjust every link sitewide accordingly.
    2. Or, Make the server p every *.html file on the server on a machine that is already overloaded.

Unfortunately, I am on a IIS 5.0 server and there is nothing I can do about that. I am not the system adminstrator and do not have access to make IIS p EVERY html file as it is requested.

I started using the Dreamweaver Library because it seemed like a good middle ground. Now, it seems to me that this is a deficiency in the software and should be looked at by Macromedia. I am sure I am not the only person working with a very large site.

I am not sure what you mean by using a database...

you aren't complaining about the time needed to update thousands of files to
the remote server after a library item change....

so i'm going to make a wild guess--
Is this 50,000 page site's "Local Site Folder" actually on a local network
share? Or maybe even defined to the actual site folder on a local server,
    with no "remote" site defined?

If the local site folder isn't on the drive inside of your workstation- dw
has to pull all the files thru the wires to build the cache. Slowing the
process down way more than normal.

You are correct, I am not complaining about the time needed to update thousands of files after a change. I am perfectly content with waiting for a site cache to be created when I instruct it to recreate it.

Yes, this 50,000 page site's "Local Site Folder" is a network share. The local site is defined as the development area of my site (networkshare/DevArea). The "Remote" site is the live area of my site (networkshare/LiveArea). The remote site is NOT under the development site, they are 2 seperate identical sites. One for development and testing and the other is public facing (well, intranet facing).

My local workstation is not going to house a "copy" of my development area as this would require more than 20Gb of hard drive space (not to mention being constantly updated). It is not possible for me to run Dreamweaver directly on the server (as if it were a workstation), nor would I want to.

Is it such a strange principle to have a development and live web site? This is common practice at my company and I can only imagine at others as well.

But anyway, the question I had was about Dreamweaver not responding to a change to a Library item. I tried Modify > Library > Update Site but it just sits there and does nothing until it eventually just stops responding.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

has doing library item updates worked okay on this setup before?
Did it gradually get slower- or can it be traced to a sudden breakdown?

    Something you can try-
I'm going to guess that the current site cache file is corrupt.

    Go to dw menu-->Site-->Edit Site
Select that site from list. Click "duplicate"
    Click okay.

you're now in a duplicate site def, and dw will create a fresh cache file.

however- it will take however long it takes to move 20 gigs thru your local
    network.

The library items always updated fine in the past and I think you may be right about the corrupted cache. I will try the duplicate method and let you know what happens.

You're on a windows server. That means you're probably limited to using an
    ASP board.
Snitz is a free ASP board.
