Default Minimum Requirements for "kid's" machine

    Hi,

I'ld like to build a maller pc running ubuntu for my son from spare parts.
Mainly for the kid's games and writing. What's the minimal requirements for
    linux ubuntu?

I have PII 350 MHz with 128MB RAM, an older 8MB graphics and an old
soundblaster rcard and a 10Gig HD

    will that suffice?

It will work but it's going to be slow, especially when running Gnome
or KDE. I've run Linux on a 400Mhz machine with 128Mb RAM and 6Gb disk.
If you can find another 128Mb stick of RAM you'll be happier. Don't
try to use OpenOffice with 128Mb but use something Like AbiWord.

    Hope this helps

Yes, ubuntu will install. Though, what kinds of games?

I did it and it works fine except it can be sluggish at times. Games
that require quick reactions won't work that well. Chess will work just
    fine.

I would install more RAM, the more the better.

Ubuntu is built around Gnome, so it's on the heavyweight end of Linux
distros. I've run it on a P3 600MHz with 256Mb of RAM and it works
    smoothly but requires some patience.

On that config you will have happier results running something like Vector
Linux 5.1 with IceWM or Fluxbox, for which your hardware is more than
adequate, or even Damn Small Linux, which will fly on that setup.

Not all distros are equal when it comes to hardware requirements.

Yeah, and DSL is hard to break.

Can't say I've ever tried to break it, but since you could just run it off
a CD which you leave in the drawer, it's pretty robust. Also, a
total re-install takes about 10 minutes.
