Minor GUI bug with Layers palette
Hi,
When working on layers via the layer palette I've noticed a minor GUI bug.
Mac OS10.3.2 - AICS - Dual 867 G4 1.5GB RAM
Layer palette options are set as follows:
Show Layers only - unchecked
Row size - Medium selected
Thumbnail: Layers Checked
Top Level Only Unchecked
Groups Checked
Objects Checked
Multiple layers selected, choosing "Collect in New Layer" results in a single layer with no drop down arrow. At first I thought it was basically a flattened layer. But "Flatten Layer" isn't an option provided in the layers palette. Or anywhere else that I'm aware of. (Although Flatten Layer would be a good option to add *hint*hint*) In actuality it's a GUI error. The drop down arrow is there only not accessable or even visible until an action occurs that causes another layer to be hilighted (including one of the nested layers in the newly created collected layer).
This doesn't happen with every file. That's the catch. I can't seem to track down the specific reason that causes this. Transparency, meshes, symbols, envelopes, linked or embedded images, clipping masks, compound paths, and blend modes don't seem to matter.
I have a file that this happens to every time. And I've seen it on many other files as well. But I can't intentionally replicate it. I have figured out that there must be at least 3 layers in the file.
It doesn't really effect much, it just requires an addition click somewhere but I thought I'd at least mention it. If the file I have would help just let me know.

Re: Minor GUI bug with Layers palette
It's a tricky thing. I've got files that it occurs in every time and it's easily repeatable. I simply can't figure out what it is in the file that causes it. It's not every file.

Re: Minor GUI bug with Layers palette
Well if it is not anything confidential I'll confirm that it is not a system thing and try it on my computer?

Of course you might have files that can't be shared, though I promise to destroy it once I have experienced the bug!
BTW the Illustrations you posted on that Illustrator site were quite impressive.

Re: Minor GUI bug with Layers palette
Here's one way I was able to reproduce it reliably in a new file:
1. Make at least three layers.
2. Select any layer except the top one.
3. Shift select any number of layers below.
4. Collect in New Layer
5. Undo
6. Repeat steps 2 through 3.
The new layer has an arrow after step 4, but not after step 6.
Notice that ordinarily when you do a Collect in New Layer, first the new layer row gets inserted with no arrow on it, and the layers that are going to be moved into it still show below it, and then the layers below disappear, and finally the arrow appears. So the Collect in New Layer process seems to be broken into two or three stages, with updates between each stage. It is my guess (I haven't looked at the code) that when the new collected layer has the same name and set of sublayers as one that previously existed and was undone, it somehow doesn't get recognized as having "changed", and so the palette doesn't refresh that row.
