Missing links using linux server
All my images/logos ect are stored on our Linux server.
When I use IDCS (with OSX 10.4) for designing for instance a magazine, I use a lot of different images stored in various folders on the server. But: when opening the document again... serveral images are missing (links are broken...) without any changes made on the server! The path to the images is unchanged...
Every time I open de doc again, even more links are broken... This takes a lot of time repairing (auto relink doesn't work) and is very annoying!
Does anyone have the same problem and/or can help me with a solution?
thanks,
martin

Re: Missing links using linux server
Make sure the clocks are synced up on your machine & on the server.
Just a suggestion, but I've seen that same thing happen, and that was the fix.
Hope it helps.

In addition to Chris' suggestion, what protocol are you using to mount the network volume on your InDesign machine? (AFP - netatalk, SMB, NFS)? What version of that protocol does the server use?
Also, have you updated to Mac OS X 10.4.7? A couple of the fixes in 10.4.7 have to do with network file systems.

Re: Missing links using linux server
We are having the same occurence of missing links with ID 3 on Mac (10.3.9) and Windows file servers (Win 2003).
We had tried both the protocols SMB and AFP. For some of the missing images InDesign even "creates" new path after restart (a.e. cursor on an image in the link palette shows completely different paths for some images, for others the path is shown correctly but the images aren't found).
Martin, what InDesign version do you use? Is this happening with ID 4?

Re: Missing links using linux server
Thanks for your reactions sofar!
I'm using 10.4.7 and IDCS.
The completely new paths are also occuring here!
We are using SMB to mount the linux-server(now trying to find out whitch version of SMB is used on the server)
Synced the clock, no result so far.
Strange... the number of missing links inceases every time I open the doc after restart!
Opening a doc... made yesterday: 14 links missing... right

Re: Missing links using linux server
Martin, can you please tell whether you have this occurence with IDCS 1 or 2, means with InDesign 3 or InDesign 4?
Meanwhile we experienced that images on a Windows file server mounted via AFP keep their links in IDCS1 correct but AFP sadly corrupts the file names on the server:
It appears that AFP allows only file names with a max of 31 letters without special characters. Additionally some files do not appear at all in the finder if the disk is mounted via AFP.
Does one know if such name limitation is typical for AFP or if it's is a matter of preferences on the Windows server?
Thank you!

Re: Missing links using linux server
Thomas,
I think the problem you are seeing is related to the old version of AFP (2.X) which is implemented in Microsoft Services for Macintosh.
You might want to have a look at this page on the Helios site:
<http://www.helios.de/products/FileTest.phtml>
which has a free utility for testing a lot of characteristics of network file systems, along with a chart of the results they have gotten for a number of them. The chart indicates that Windows 2003 Server AFP has problems with both long file names and Unicode characters in file names, among other things.
There are third-party AFP 3.x servers available for Windows (e.g., Group Logic's ExtremeZ•IP or Cyan Soft's MacServerIP). Though they are not free, I think they solve these problems.
Also, the Mac OS X client version can make a difference. The 10.4.7 update reportedly has some fixes for third-party AFP servers. Are you running 10.4.7 on the clients?

Re: Missing links using linux server
I am having a similar problem except I am not saivng to a server but to an external hard drive that is accessed through a couple of different machines, but only one at a time. We are using OSX 10.3.9.

Re: Missing links using linux server
What "similar problem" do you have? For instance ...
- lost links in ID?
- volume mount problems?
- mixed systems/platforms?
- file apparence/name irritations in the finder?
- what ID version?
