Re: Missing Wingding characters
I, too, am having problems with ID CS2 and AI CS2 when trying to use Zapf Dingbats or Monotype Sorts fonts which I've been using for years. When typed in either app, the characters that must be accessed using key combinations such as shift-option-zero just don't appear. This is not a good thing for my production!
The results under OS X on two different machines, one using Suitcase and the other using FontExplorer, are identical: the characters are not accessible from the keyboard.
These applications are supposed to be professional-level. Having to select a character in a Glyph palette just to access it is very kindergarten-like. It's time-consuming, therefore counterproductive.
Any feature which requires I remove my hand from the keyboard to use the mouse does nothing but slow me down. Please fix the problem with the fonts.

Couldn't agree more. Can't count the number of times I was zipping along and had to stop to find a glyph that I used to use keystrokes to invoke.

Re: Missing Wingding characters
Not all glyphs that you can reach from the Glyphs palette are reachable from the keyboard or exists as regular keystrokes. So isn't the Glyphs palette then a marvelous invention? It gives you acces to keystrokes that exist in the font but not on the keyboard apart from an overview of all that is in a font.

Re: Missing Wingding characters
Thanks go to Tom Usrey for his suggestion.
I did some experimenting, and what I found is that if I select the Pi font _before_ I type the key combination, then I get the correct glyph. If I type the key combination first, highlight the resulting glyph and then select the font, I don't get the expected results.
That solves my problem...

Re: Missing Wingding characters
I spoke too soon. While what I said above applies to InDesign, Illustrator doesn't respond to the same technique.
Another thing I noted while using Webdings in Illustrator is that while the key combinations work in that font, using the same key combination in ITC Zapf Dingbats produces a default glyph, not the glyph that is actually there.
So what is going on? Anyone have a clue?
