mksysb tape won't restore

    Default mksysb tape won't restore

    Hi there,

I made a mksysb tape from an 7026-6H1. For testing I wanted to restore
it to an 7011-G40. The G40 reads from the tape but does not switch to
299 (booting). The prob seems to be that the 6H1 is an uniprocessor, the
G40 is a dual processor machine. So the kernels may be different and
therefore not booting. The OS version is 4.3.3 which runs fine at the
    G40 if installed from CD.
Has anyone an idea how to clone the 6H1 config to the G40?

Hopefully you have a cd rom - you can boot off the cd and restore from
a tape image using the menus

to clone any system, you need to boot from cd, then restore the mksysb
with the cd still in the drive.. this was, when a new driver / fileset
is required it will be taken from tape.....

you can however install all the drivers onto the system and create the
mksysb, but this is an ass about face way of cloning and is only done if
you do not have access to a cd on the new system and you dont want to be
swapping in and out with aix install tapes etc...

another way would be to install the bos.up fileset, this will not cause
issues on the mp box as long as /unix is still linked to the bos_mp
kernel... then you can take the mksysb etc...

but. the best way is the 1st way i have mentioned.

Ummm, correct me, but ainīt the G40 a microchannel box?

You need to boot from a 433 CD, when you get the option to install the
OS, you need to take the option to restore from a system backup, I
think it's option 3 on the menu.

    Hi there,

booting from CDROM was the solution. Thanks to all and shame on me for
    not remembering it ...

And Jan You are right the G40 is a microchannel but is supported up to 4.3.3

So mksysb restore is possible across different bus architectures?

MCA is supported right up to AIX 5.1, it's 5.2 onwards that doesn't
    support it.

To be factually correct :-) mksysb restore isn't possible across
different bus architecture, but restore of the data from the mksysb
tape using the CD method outlined earlier works across different
    architectures.

Yup, knew that. Found out the hard way when I wanted to install 5.2 on
my 43p-140, which isnīt exactly MCA but shares the same fate :(

I expected something like that[1]. Would installing all the filesets
for a MCA-machine help or is it a kernel issue?
